Poetry, Again

I've decided to try to give my poetry-writing muscles a wake-up workout. I thought about what has made me happy this summer, and I realized that sunflowers made me happy - happier, perhaps, than a flower should make me, but there you go.

So perhaps I can put that happiness into a poem. It may be a slog, or it may be a happy two-step; I hope it's the latter. Further, deponent saith naught. At least until I can actually write something I'm happy with.

*wanders off, relatively pleased with her plan*

FFXIV Write Day 8: Strain

(1) This isn't a WoL-fic for once! (It's Alisaie. Because of course it is.)
(2) It's the longest one yet, at 1,302 words.
(3) It... might be my favorite thus far?

Spoilers for early Shadowbringers. I'd call this a "missing scene" fic.

"a thing with feathers" - 1,302 words - written for the prompt: "Strain"

a thing with feathers

The strain of holding it together was getting to Alisaie.

Okay, she might have lost her temper a bit with the Crystal Exarch when she first arrived on the Source’s reflection. That was understandable, though, as she had been pulled from battle—forced to leave the Warrior of Light just when she was needed most. Yes, she had been most displeased, and had let the Crystal Exarch know with precise words.

But since then, she had tried to act like everything was fine. Operative word: try.

She agreed with the others that they should do all they could to help the First while they were stuck there. So she learned all she could of this new-to-her world, and set out doing patrols in Lakeland. She actually was grateful for the work: it kept her mind off the predicament she was in.

When the Exarch suggested she go to Amh Araeng and ascertain the situation there, she didn’t protest. Not verbally, anyway. She kept her face pleasant and agreed to attend to the task, but inside she was fuming. She wanted to BE THERE when the Exarch finally succeeded in summoning the Warrior, to look at the face of her dear friend and know all was right.

Alisaie was sure she had successfully tamped her temper, but with her nod of acquiescence, something softened in the Exarch’s features—what she could see of them, anyway. She felt a flush start to crawl up her neck, and steeled herself as best as she could. She tried telling herself that there was a WORLD to save, and that surely the Warrior would be fine, but her heart was longing to be home, where she belonged. Not here. Not in this world, without her dear friend.

She turned and left before the Crystal Exarch could say anything more, retreating to her room. There she set about packing for her journey. She was just packing some rations when there was a knock on her door.

"Alisaie?" called the voice of her twin.

She sighed, then opened the door. "What is it?"

"Are you all right?" At her glare, he said, "I know this is hard for you—"

"I’m FINE, Alphinaud. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to finish packing, and go talk to Moren to learn more of Amh Araeng." She turned back to her rucksack.

She could practically hear her twin thinking. A pause, and then he said, "The Warrior of Light—"

"—is also fine, I’m sure. Really, Alphinaud. You’ve been fluttering about me like a mother hen ever since I arrived here. Don’t you have business to attend to in Kholusia?"

He actually winced. "Yes, of course. Do be careful, won’t you?" And he took his leave.

Alisaie closed the door as he departed, then turned and leaned against it. She blew her bangs out of her face in a frustrated sigh. Am I that obvious? She had tried to pretend she had everything in control, but it seemed she was failing.

From time to time, she could forget her predicament. She’d developed a routine since arriving—breakfast with Alphinaud, lessons with Moren, lunch at the Wandering Stairs, patrols in the afternoon. She’d move from place to place without thought, losing herself in the new familiarity, but she could feel the way the strain was affecting her: a quicker tempo while walking, shallower breathing, the terrible insomnia…

It was too much.

It started with a single tear, but soon she was sobbing. She threw herself on the bed and punched at her pillow. It wasn’t FAIR. It wasn’t right. She should be there, with her dearest friend, not here, gods only know how many malms and malms away…

Eventually, the crying stopped. Her breath became steady once more.

"Got that out of your system, then?" she said aloud to herself.

Right. She had to go see Moren…

Alisaie had arrived at Mord Souq, the market in Amh Araeng’s eastern desert. She looked around, holding a hand up over her eyes to shield them from the sun, and looked for someone friendly-looking to ask inquiries of.

There, by one of the merchants. A blonde woman in a long gray tunic, examining the fruit. Alisaie had the impression that she was a helpful sort. She walked over to the woman, and said, "Excuse me. I’m new in town, and was wondering about the situation in this area of Norvrandt."

The woman looked up from the fruit and studied her, then said, "You’ve lost someone."

"How—", Alisaie began, surprised, then ducked her head. Quietly, she continued. "How did you know?"

"It’s written all over your face. It can help to talk about it. I’m Tesleen, by the way," she said, then gestured at the nearby tables the market had for those sampling the food wares.

Alisaie looked at the tables. She heaved a sigh, then said, "All right."

They sat down. Tesleen’s face softened in the same way the Exarch’s had as she said, "Now then. Was their passing hard?"

"They haven’t—", she blurted. She stopped herself, took a breath, then started again. "We’re merely separated."

"I see," Tesleen said, her face still soft. "Was it… was it a hard breakup?"

"It’s not like that!" Alisaie protested. And then she began to tell the story.

In a way, it DID feel good to talk about it. She’d been trying to hide her emotions from everyone, afraid to burden them with what she was truly feeling.

She hadn’t wanted to tell Alphinaud—her twin would have thought her childish. Thancred was off somewhere with Minfilia, and anyway, while she trusted him in battle and an ally, she dare not trust him with her feelings. Y’Shtola was busy with the Night’s Blessed, and Urianger with his books in Il Mheg, though she rather suspected he would had given her a comforting ear. And she was still too angry with the Exarch to confide in him.

That had left—no one, but herself. But all the psyching up she did, assuring herself it would be FINE, that everything was okay, hadn’t worked.

In truth, she was a mess.

She had finished her story, and now sat there, head bowed, studying her clasped hands.

Tesleen reached out and laid a hand gently over Alisaie’s. "Thank you for trusting me with your story," she said softly. Alisaie looked up at that, and Tesleen gave her a small smile. "I’m sure you’ll see your friend again."

"You can’t possibly know that," Alisaie said.

"No. But I can hope. And it is my wish for you to hope as well."

"I couldn’t. If the worst should happen—"

"—you’d survive, and carry on. I can tell you’re a survivor, Alisaie. Like me." Tesleen smiled that gentle smile again. "It is my hope of easing the pain of others that keeps me going. Surviving. Let your hope of seeing your friend again carry you forward."

Carry me forward. "I’m not sure where ‘forward’ is," she admitted.

"You came to Amh Araeng for a reason. To ‘scope out the situation’, or something like that?"

Alisaie nodded.

"So do what you came to do. Everyday, live with purpose, and let hope guide your path."

Alisaie sat still for a moment, then said, "Can you tell me the situation here?"

Tesleen’s laugh was bright. "I can do more than that. I can give you purpose. Something to lose yourself in when hope isn’t enough."

"Truly?"

"Truly. From what you said, you sound like quite the warrior yourself. We could use someone like you at the Inn."

Purpose. It’s a start. A start past the unyielding pain and emptiness. She felt a flicker of hope kindle in her heart then. She wasn’t quite ready to hope for that deepest desire, but she could at least hope for a purposeful tomorrow.

End Notes: I needed a title, so I searched for "hope quotes", because I knew there were some good ones. The title is from Emily Dickinson, which I've heard before:

Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all.

I don't know if this title is absolutely fitting for this fic, but I feel better than leaving it untitled.

In many ways, it feels as if Team 8 was the staging ground for what would become the modern idol cottage industry in Tokyo. People tell me off for calling them "alt. idols" now because this type of "idol, but..." is very much the mainstream, but when faced with groups like Pretty Chuu and their presentation, my first impression is alt. idol. Although... having said that, first single, Oshihen♡cancel, is more pleasant that what a lot of these groups offer, a softer ZOC perhaps? Definitely an Oomori Seiko influence. Yet still, founding member, Tanikawa Hiziri (purple), once knew a different life. Perhaps you might remember her as Team 8's Tanikawa Hijiri.

Hijirin!

On 3rd April 2014, Team 8 was revealed, and we first met Hijirin, alongside Abe Mei, Okabe Rin, Okubora Chinatsu, Oguri Yui, Oda Erina, Nagano Serika, Fujimura Natsuki, Onishi Momoka, Kuranoo Narumi, Shitao Miu, Cho Kurena, Hamamatsu Riona, Fukuchi Rena, Honda Hitomi, Yokomichi Yuri, the other Yokoyama Yui, and Yoshino Miyu. By August, they had already lost a member, gained a member, and their revival of Party ga Hajimaru yo had debuted. Hijirin, born on 26th December 2000, and thus Y2K compliant, did not initially standout in her time in Team 8, although not for want of trying. A representative of Akita, she only ranked during the general election once during 2017 and came in at position #96, which might seem so close to the bottom of the pile as to not be worth mentioning, but I want to celebrate anyone who made it to the elections at any rank during these years because just getting that far shows impossible determination and represents a tremendous effort in catching the attention of the audience. Team 8 didn't have enough time to really prove their worth—to get the kind of results that would reflect in the elections would take an inhuman effort over a greater timeframe, one that would outlast the adolescence of the group's members—but the impact they had on AKB is undeniable now. Despite what might seem like disappointing popularity poll results though, from 2014, Hijirin and Team 8 were propping up AKB and filling out the ranks of members on every B side from the Mayuyu fronted stab at replicating Koi Suru Fortune Cookie's good, ah, fortune, Kokoro no Placard onwards.

From the second year of junior high school onwards, Hijirin was in it, holding down her career as well as attending classes, and I can't even begin to imagine how tough that must be for anyone but especially for someone in AKB at that moment in time. In 2017, as the members of Team 8 began to diffuse throughout the older teams in an attempt to re-focus AKB, Hijirin gained a concurrent membership in Okabe Team A, which lasted until her graduation several years later in 2019, presumably as she approached crunch period at school and was forced to re-focus on her own goals. Still, the dream of being an idol clearly did not leave Hijirin, and the things she had experienced since junior high clearly helped her decide that, after exams, being an idol was what she wanted to do, and so:

In many ways, it feels as if Team 8 was the staging ground for what would become the modern idol cottage industry in Tokyo.

One thing about The Thursday Murder Club having such a high body count is that it doesn't have all that many different reasons for the high body count. It uses things more than once.

This post is about men killing their wives and why that's romantic.

Or, in a broader sense: men having control over their significant other's death and disposition of remains. And why that's a sign of love when people the narrative likes do it. Spoilers, obviously )

Halfway through one of the tracks on the Drive soundtrack, my MP3 player put on about four seconds of "Expo 86" by Death Cab For Cutie. It's not uploaded to my MP3 player, or any other Death Cab for Cutie songs, for that matter. If there was the song there, I could almost understand it. As it is, this makes things even more confusing. I've got no idea how it might've happened.

The track plays without interruptions or interjections just fine on my computer.

It's so baffling I'm going to roll with it and say that it's technology. There's no other explanation. Technology.

We are now past assignment deadline and those who were not submitted have been defaulted. The mods noticed a mistake on the deadlines on the Dreamwidth pin (but no other dreamwidth posts nor the AO3), so if you were defaulted but able to complete by the Dreamwidth pin time, please email us at mistymoonexchanges@gmail.com and we will give you your assignment back.

PH will be out soon. Many assignments have an extension, so if you do not see yourself on the pinch hits, nor have a gift, this is likely why.

Yeah well, that was all sorts of fun. One must see one's medicine person in person, every two years, and since it's down at the same subway stop as my dentist, I figured it would be a piece of cake. Um yes, but only if people refrain from jumping in front of trains as one poor soul did this morning. Thus no service between Ossington and St. George, shuttle buses will run, etc etc. I had intended to leave at 1 allowing me an hour to go five stops with slack for unforeseen circs. Instead I left at 12:20 and hoofed it over three stops and change to Bedford where the elevator is, and caught my southbound train. Did not manage to find the route through MARS that takes you to the Eaton wing on Elizabeth though I did manage it on the way back. It's well signposted while in TGH but becomes a bloody video game once you hit the MARS building: empty corridors,  blank walls, hidden elevators, you figure out where the subway entrance is hiding.  And all this time service had been restored on the e-w line except for Bathurst itself, at about the time I left the house, but the TTC's update page wasn't about to give that information out.

After all that, I came home by my regular route up to Dupont, bypassing the crowds of students on the e-w. There were already masses of them at St George when I was trying to get to Bedford, all going down to lectures and blocking the sidewalk as they did so. Did not want to encounter them ging home, since the unlovely youth of today do not register the presence of others. But as I was waiting for the lights to change so I could get across Spadina, a guy comes up and tries to hand me a twenty dollar bill. Must have thought I was an impoverished cripple, bent over her walker like that. Or something. He was surprised when I politely refused, but as I need to tell people on occasion (like the guy who panhandles outside the Dupont Shoppers and 'won't take money from old people') the government pays me to be alive after 75 so I can spare a modicum of largesse. And since the Dupont bus is a myth, I then walked home. All this walking got me well over10,000 steps, go me, but they were painful steps because we're in humid swollen September and my joints-- or more specifically my tendons-- will not be calmed no matter how much Ibuprofen I give them. Or maybe they're just registering the fact that tomorrow is going to rain.

Meanwhile I have eczema on my left elbow, gone raw from heat and rubbing on the rollator's armrest. Shall try to get a bandage on it to cover the worst of it, but it's exactly in the spot I can't see. This is one of the rare occasions when a sig.oth would come in handy.

But let's not talk about that! I woke up in the middle of the night absolutely CONVINCED I'd solved one of the many lingering mysteries in Dungeon Crawler Carl and then realized as I woke up a little more that no, I absolutely had not solved anything, and now I can't even remember what it was!

But I know more of you have read the books now, so let's discuss: Parade of Horribles spoilers )

So what do you think it was about?

Wow, can't believe that worked: just saying I was going to write something meant I did it. Like a whole hundred words. Wild.

...I would try it again, but I feel like I should wait until I'm actually about to do it to declare it. Or is that exactly the wrong strategy? I don't know, I don't understand me. I read one of Joe's 大人学 articles today about 內耗 ("internal friction" / overthinking), and I was like "ugh, that's appallingly on point."

Anyway, why not experiment with more updating?

Today we voted! I brought name change documentation just in case, but the internet was correct that as long as you have valid photo ID that matches your current voter registration, there's no problem. (I petitioned the court for a name change last month and am still in the early stages of switching over my identification.)

And I've decided that my September study challenge will be to see how quickly I can surpass my August metrics. (By starting a week late I'm setting myself up for success in October... as long as I use the August metrics again, which I certainly will. I'll take motivation over psychometric validity, plz and ty.)

Today I'm making pork chops and a chop salad.

Pork chop marinade includes roughly:
1 tablespoon full-flavor olive oil
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
dash of Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon Grovestone Little Italy Pizza Seasoning

For the chop salad I have lots of little tomatoes from the garden, plus two tiny cucumbers, so this will be more tomato than cucumber. Consequently I want to use basil as the green leaf this time.
