Encounter at a PT Office

So I was taking a friend (a fandom friend, which is important to the story!) to some doctor appointments since they don't drive.

We're sitting in the PT waiting room and the younger-than-me lady on the other side of the small room is proudly holding up a crocheted granny square. The colors are pretty and it's a good looking square. She announces that she has just learned how to do granny squares, getting the pattern and the tension correct for it. So there is some general 'good for you' murmurs but, well, it's a waiting room and we don't know you.

The lady's mom evidently finishes with her appointment, and they are getting their coats on.

I'm the driver, so I had brought my laptop to do some writing on Santa projects that need to get done. I happen to be working on a Teen Wolf fic at that moment. The chair is not the best for having a laptop on my lap, since it keeps sliding down. So I'm futzing with the story as well as being slightly uncomfortable with the laptop.

As she's buttoning her coat, the crocheting lady leans in slightly and asks, relatively loudly, "I'm sorry to be a bother but I can see you focusing on something. Are you a writer?" She was polite but she was also like 2 feet away from my knees (small waiting room!).

Caught by surprise, I nod and say, "Yes, working on a story."

She cheerfully asks what it's about.

Now. I've done the 'what is fanfiction' lecture in a lot of places but a PT waiting room wasn't going to be one of them. So I go with just, "werewolves".

BOTH the lady and her mom go, "Werewolves! How wonderful? Can we read it?"

Now my friend is in the corner laughing in her sleeve. Traitor!

I try the polite, "Well, I mostly write for myself." A relatively true statement.

"Oh! We'd love to read things for you," the crocheting lady says way too cheerfully. "It is so much better if you share your writing with others."

Scrambling, I finally say, "Oh, I do share with some friends. So it's okay." [Thank you, my internet friends!]

Then the crocheting lady asks what kind of werewolves, do they fully shift or only beta shift and can they do it any time or only on the full moon? I give her the Teen Wolf answers: both, and any time. She's pleased as punch at all of that.

They give a cheery, "If you ever want someone to read your stories, we can do that!" before leaving.

If *she* had said fanfiction, I probably would have gone into more details. But it was entirely startling and, as always, it happens too fast to have a good comeback.

My friend pointed out that the crocheting lady probably was on Tumblr and I didn't think fast enough to ask her about her shoelaces. But I'm suspecting she would have been pleased to have stolen them from the President...

But I did have to share! It was just too wild!

Spam is better in a sandwich... maybe?

We have, for reasons, a land line. And the hubby uses the number as the main point of contact for many of his (multiple) doctors. So, there's no getting rid of it at the moment.

Which means we are subject to any number of spam calls. Now, I know the folk on the line are just there to earn a living. It's probably not their fault that what they are doing is annoying.

We're also old enough to be getting social security and medicare, so that has its own level of spam calling. I know it's not that hard to figure out that Goddess47 is over 65 and has a phone, and she's getting medicare. I don't know what the callers are selling, but we get a lot of calls related to 'get a new medicare card' or 'new and improved medical benefits' and so on.

I've recently started to troll them back. I have a 'little old lady' voice I use when I answer the phone. (Yeah, the doctor's offices don't always have identifiers, so we answer the damn phone.) So I whine "Hello" and then see what they are talking about...

Then I go into my bit. I'm always cheerful. "I'm so surprised I'm still on your list to call! I talked to [pick a random name] earlier and he/she took all-llll my information. So I should be updated in your system."

That always throws them for a loop. If they protest that I'm not updated, then I do the worried, "But [random name] helped me just a little while ago. Do you know [random name]? He/she was such a nice person and so helpful. Maybe if you can transfer me back to [random name], we can all talk about what they did with my information!"

If they still persist, and most hang up on me at that point (success!), then I go on about how wonderful a person [random name] was and "you should take some lessons from [random name] on helping customers." No one gets past that and they hang up. Success.

I did have good luck one time with yet another call from the same place when they introduced themselves as some name like 'George' and, with my most enthusiastic tone, I leaned into, "George! How good to hear from you! I've heard so much about you!" Click. And the last time I heard from that particular spammer...

Luckily, I'm retired, so I can spend the three minutes trolling the spammers. I'm never mean to the people, like I know they're between a rock and a hard place, but I suspect (hoping?) there's a note somewhere that says "these people are crazy, don't call them"...

In the mean time, I'm faintly amused... I mean, I do a lot of writing and I'm having fun coming up with stories for these poor people.

Why This Must Be Read:

John is on mandatory leave from Atlantis but Woolsey has decided that command staff should not take leave at the same time. So John is hanging out at the SGC because, well, he has no where he wants to go. While he's there, DADT is officially repealed.

An interesting character study of John Sheppard when he really understands what the repeal of DADT might mean to him.

As a side note, it's illuminating to see the effect DADT had on at least John... It's easy to forget that DATA was in effect when the show was running.
